Back inside his quarters, Coz turned to stare out the window and into the rain, which had begun to pelt the rectangular windows mercilessly.

He would miss the view, he thought to himself as he watched the night fowl swoop seamlessly across the waves of the Umsaskis Lake beyond. But he wouldn’t miss the mansion.

It was the only home he had ever known. He’d been brought to the remote estate in Northern Maine when he was a mere baby. He had no recollection of the short few months he had spent in the outside world, not even the sound of his birth mother’s voice.

Like the other half bloods conceived during the war, he had lived on the estate for decades. They lived a charmed life, playing polo, swimming in the lake. For Coz, something was missing. He wasn’t sure what exactly, but he longed for more.

The elders sent the younger generation to capture donors only because they were easily recognized and could not tolerate sunlight, or so they said.

It was a fear, of course, that the mortals would remember the vampyre of old folklore and run the immortals out as they had hundreds of years ago.

Coz was certain there was more to the picture. In his opinion, the Senate arrogantly believed that they were worthier than the half breeds. The half-blooded vampyres were dispensable in the eyes of the originals, but if a Senate member was caught, the Vampyre Senate would crumble. Coz didn’t agree. He could rule in the Senate if given the chance. Although, he knew that as a half breed, he would never have the opportunity.

He spun away from the window and reached for his suitcase, knowing that he would have to pack light. It shouldn’t take more than a day or two. He narrowed his eyes as he studied his wardrobe carefully. He needed something slick but subdued. Calling attention to himself was not part of the plan.

A knock on his door distracted him from his packing. Aristotle appeared in the doorway, and Coz cast him a glance over his shoulder.

“What is it?” he asked. “I have to leave soon.”

“I know. I just wanted to warn you about something.”

Coz paused and faced the Senate member fully. Of all the elders, Coz found Aristotle the easiest to deal with.

“What’s that?”

“May I enter?”

Coz gestured for him to come closer and Aristotle obliged, stepping across the threshold only after being invited.

“The deal we have with the Council of Covens is over,” Aristotle explained. “You will likely be called upon more frequently.”

“Why? What happened?” Coz’s brows furrowed in confusion.

“The witches have called for a split from the realms. They want no further interactions with any of us, mortals excluded.”

The words meant little to Coz. He had knowledge of the comings and goings of the other realms. Well, with the exception of the fairies, who unwillingly provided blood to the vampyres.

“Why is that?” Coz asked, his curiosity idle.

“Who knows? The power plays are endless. Political fodder, really,” the elder sighed. “In any case, I need you to go farther for your donor this time.
